For nearly 30 years, H Potter has been designing and building trellises that elevate your outdoor spaces while growing with your garden for years. Our history with quality garden products began in the 1990s, when founder and owner Jerry Peed started H Potter as one of the first companies manufacturing and producing terrariums (or Wardian Cases). With years of quality and one-of-a-kind craftsmanship, we began designing and selling other gardening items and supplies, from each metal garden trellis, to lantern, to planter, and more. Through these years, we've kept our focus on what we believe is the most important: our family, and the quality and intentionality of our products. Whether you bought a trellis from us 15 years ago, 15 days ago, or 15 seconds ago, you'll be getting the same consistency from the company that, after almost 30 years, is still completely family-owned and run, and works with our friends at the same factory we started with.

Every trellis we create, whether a wall-mounted design, a freestanding panel, or a towering garden obelisk, is the result of meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful engineering. And we want to give you an inside look at that design and why it matters.

It Begins With Design: Artistry & Function

Before we ever manufacture or ship a single piece of metal, each trellis starts with a sketch (most of the time, hand-drawn) that is guided by our desire to create a beautiful product that also performs flawlessly in the garden and will hold up to years of real outdoor usage. During this process, we consider:

Classic architectural inspiration

It's no secret that many of our traditional designs draw on inspiration from classic English and European garden structures, classic ironwork, and timeless trellis design. Our goal is to marry the decor of your garden with the timeless nature of our ironwork.

Botanical needs

Since each trellis is designed to not only look nice, but to function in the garden, we consider the needs of many different types of plants. That's why our trellises are built to hold the weight of any large climbing plant you can think of, while sustaining long-term exposure to the weather.

Proportion & presence

You don't want an ugly trellis in your garden, and we would never try to sell you one. For this reason, we design each trellis not only to be compatible with a large number of climbing plants, but also to be compatible with a large number of gardens. With a variety of sizes and styles, find the perfect match for your space, whether that's a small ornate trellis, or a larger multi-paneled screen.

Photogenic appeal

Any trellis can look good when it's hidden behind a gorgeous blooming plant, but when you don't want to put an ugly trellising system behind your plants, or the cooler autumn weather brings an end to the full flowering vines, you'll want something that's not an eyesore. Each of our trellises has ironwork that is specially designed to look good any time of the year and will have all your friends asking where you found that trellis.

Premium Materials: Built to Last

If you've done a little bit of shopping for a garden trellis lately, you'll notice most providers on the market rely heavily on thin wire frames or lightweight materials. If you've used these products before, you'll also be aware that these products don't tend to last, collapse under substantial weight, and can be dangerous when holding large amounts of plant material in the air. This is why every H Potter trellis is crafted using heavy-gauge, hand-welded iron, not just designed to sell as many trellises as possible, but to handle and excel in real outdoor conditions.

Why Iron?

In our opinion, iron provides unparalleled durability, weight, and structural integrity in the garden. Unlike wood or vinyl (commonly used materials in other trellises), it won't warp in the sunlight, bend under the weight of your plants, rot due to moisture, or crack over time.

Hand-Welded for Strength

Every joint is welded by hand, never pressed, snapped, or glued. This creates a seamless structure that stands tall through:

  • High winds (yes, even the high winds where you live)
  • Heavy vines from roses to clematis
  • Winter snow loads
  • Whatever harsh weather your climate gets

The Finishing Touch: Our Multi-Step Finish

The signature H Potter finish isn't just in our one-of-a-kind charcoal brown, hand-rubbed finish—it's the protection and durability the finish gives the trellis year after year. Each trellis is built using our special multi-layered finish, a process that we've spent a long time perfecting with our friends at our partner factory. While we don't hide any of the materials we use from you, how we do it and the process of it is a little bit of a secret (kind of like our own gardening version of a secret sauce). But here's an overview of the elements we use in the production.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

The iron frame is thoroughly cleaned and prepped to create optimal adhesion for coatings. After this preparation, the metal is protected with a zinc-based primer, adding a critical layer of corrosion resistance before the final finish is applied. This multi-step process means the finish doesn’t just rub off at the smallest abrasion—it’s built to handle the day-to-day weathering that naturally happens in your garden.

  • Seals and protects the iron surface
  • Improves adhesion for color powder coats
  • Adds an initial layer of corrosion resistance
  • Extends the life of the final finish

Step 2: Charcoal Brown or Black Powder Coat

Once the zinc coat has cured, a rich charcoal brown or deep matte black powder coat is applied. This is the primary color layer that defines the trellis’s appearance while adding substantial protection against rust, moisture, and everyday outdoor exposure.

Step 3: Hand-Rubbed Black Faux Finish (Charcoal Brown Only)

For trellises finished in charcoal brown, a hand-rubbed black faux finish is carefully applied. This artisanal step enhances depth and dimension, giving the trellis a subtly aged, architectural look. This hand-applied detailing is exclusive to the charcoal brown finish and is not used on black powder-coated designs.

Handcrafted Details: The Human Touch

While machines help with cutting and shaping, true craftsmanship comes from the hands of our artisans.

Hand-Formed Embellishments

Scrolls, spirals, decorative finials, and architectural details are often bent and shaped by hand using heat, pressure, and practiced technique. This level of attention ensures that when climbing plants begin weaving through, everything falls into place beautifully.

Balanced Symmetry

Each piece is checked for alignment, ensuring:

  • Straight lines stay straight
  • Scrolls match in size
  • Frames remain perfectly square

Built for the Garden: Engineered for Real Use

While each of our trellises is a beautiful, handcrafted piece of art, it also has to function in a garden environment. That's why our trellises are tested for weather durability once the final prototype is manufactured, and tested in real garden conditions by our team. Every trellis must meet our standards for both aesthetics and strength before it's approved for production.

Freestanding Trellis

We ensure that every trellis design:

  • Will anchor securely in soil, so they won't go anywhere
  • The weight is balanced properly, so plants can climb a secure structure
  • They withstand the weight of any plant you'll want to grow

Wall Trellis

We ensure that in every trellis design:

  • Mounting points are strong, no worrying about the security of the trellis
  • Airflow stays behind climbing plants, no unhealthy plants here
  • Installation is simple and intuitive, you don't need to be a professional to assemble

Obelisk

We confirm that every obelisk design:

  • Has vertical weight distribution - it won't tip when anchored
  • Ease of assembly, just like all our products
  • Stable bases for pots or garden beds

Assembly Made Simple: Designed With You in Mind

We don't want assembly to be a headache, so each trellis includes step-by-step assembly guides that break down the process into approachable, easy-to-follow steps. Each trellis that requires assembly comes with a unique instruction manual for that particular trellis. We engineer each piece to be intuitive so you spend less time assembling and more time enjoying your garden.

Thoughtful Hardware

Where hardware is needed, it's:

  • Rust-resistant
  • Minimal
  • Designed to remain discreet once installed

Trellis FAQ

What makes an H Potter trellis different from lightweight trellises?

H Potter trellises are crafted from heavy-gauge, hand-welded iron and finished for long-term outdoor performance. They’re designed to support substantial plant weight and hold up through seasons of weather exposure.

Will an iron trellis rust outdoors?

Any metal outdoors can show wear over time, but our finishing system is designed to resist rust and protect the iron through typical outdoor conditions. Placement, climate, and maintenance will influence long-term appearance.

Can these trellis support heavy climbing plants like roses?

Yes. Each trellis is engineered to handle heavy vines and substantial growth, including plants like roses and clematis, when installed and anchored appropriately.

Do H Potter trellis require assembly?

Some models require assembly and include step-by-step instructions specific to that trellis. We engineer hardware and connections to be intuitive, so setup is straightforward.

What’s the difference between a wall trellis, freestanding trellis, and obelisk?

A wall trellis mounts to a structure and help keep airflow behind plants. A freestanding trellis anchors into soil and creates vertical support in beds. An obelisk provides tall, vertical structure and is popular for pots or garden beds.
