Embracing Autumn Gardening!

It's Time To Start Your Fall Garden

As the temperature begins to cool, and the leaves start to change color, autumn invites the gardener to transition the garden to new plants and flowers. While many people start to pack up their gardening supplies for the winter, with a little extra work, your garden can maintain a vibrant, colorful display until the first snowfall. So, whether you’re a skilled and seasoned gardener, or just starting out, hop on and let’s take a look at some of the best types of plants for autumn gardening.

Chrysanthemums -

Packing a vibrant punch of color, Chrysanthemums (mums for short) are the perfect fall flower. Coming in a variety of different colors, from bright yellows to rich reds, Chrysanthemums won’t start to bloom until late summer or early fall. And when these flowers do bloom, the warm collection of colors will create the quintessential fall aura. Plant your mums in well-drained soil either in a flower bed or container, and make sure that they receive full sunlight (particularly as it gets colder).

Stonecrop -

Another exquisite autumn plant, Stonecrop, or Sedum as it is sometimes referred to, are easy to maintain and produce deep transitioning tones throughout their blooming season. With thick green leaves and clusters of star-shaped flowers, watch as Stonecrop changes from pink to a deeper red throughout the fall. With the added benefit of being mostly drought-tolerant, this is perfect for busy fall gardeners.

Asters -

What if you could continue to attract pollinators during the fall, adding to the overall health of your garden, while having a flower that’s shades of purple, pink, and white created a lovely contrast to the autumn oranges, golds, and reds? With Asters you can have all of these wonderful characteristics in your fall garden. Check out the variety of different colors and choose which shades fit best in your garden this fall!

Ornamental Grasses -

Because every garden needs a filler, ornamental grasses are a hardy option for the fall gardener. With different textures and movement, an ornamental grass provides stunning foliage as your garden’s base layer. Find a grass that changes colors in the cooler temperatures and create a striking look for your home and garden.

Japanese Maples -

A larger option for your garden, Japanese maples make a dramatic statement with their stunning fall foliage. Capture the true spirit of an autumn garden with a brilliant array of reds, oranges, and yellows. Plant this garden centerpiece somewhere in partial shade, and watch as it takes the spotlight this fall.

Evergreen Shrubs -

The perfect all season greenery, evergreens as most of us know, are exactly that, always green. Consider options like boxwood, juniper, or holly. With year round foliage, your garden stays green from August to December, allowing your garden to have a dash of green no matter what the weather is doing. These plants are hardy, but would likely prefer partial shade and will probably need to be pruned or cleaned out during the spring season.

Pumpkins & Gourds -

How could you have an autumn garden without the inclusion of pumpkins or gourds! Not only are these a great way to add some greenery and color to your garden, they also double as a practical plant. Add a festive seasonal flair to your garden as these gourds ripen on the vine, and harvest them closer to the holidays for either decoration or to eat. Plant these awesome autumn additions in the middle of the summer for the best results in your garden come the later fall months.
